Let your resume TALK

Posted by admin   |   08, Apr, 2011

What’s in a resume you might ask? It just outlines the academic credentials. If this is what you have on mind then you are partially wrong.

Your resume is the first point of contact with your prospective employer. Your resume must speak for you. What your objective is, what your strengths are, what skills you can bring to the company; and how you suit the job position. While an interest in academics is standard employers look for candidates with good skills, and a positive attitude.

Personalize your resume. The most common faux pas is copy pasting standard resumes. Skill sets vary from person to person, hence you need to understand your skills and demonstrate how you suit the role.

Elucidate your objective. Employers want clear headed candidates who know what they want for themselves and what they can bring to the company.

Substantiate claims. If you call yourself a natural leader then your work must reflect that. Cite instances of when you have led teams and crises you managed. Never make false claims that you cannot corroborate.

Paint a picture. Hard selling is off putting. “I AM THE BEST”, “I HAVE NO FAULTS”; “I WORK LONG HOURS therefore you can hire me”. You need to paint a picture of yourself not hard sell. There is a difference in saying I worked really long hours at my previous office, and I volunteered to spare a few extra hours to complete OUR project in time.

Finally in brief mention a few lines about yourself. It’s great to tell people you have a fun side to you. Ice skating, kayaking, snorkeling, travel, pets, music whatever your interests you can mention it in short. After all everyone would love to have someone fun on the team.

Let your resume sound positive and informed. PROOF read your resume so it is error free. Common errors include spelling, grammar, wrong job position, incorrect company name (when you are applying to multiple companies simultaneously).

Writing a resume is a simple task as long as you do it yourself because you know yourself best. What do you think makes a good resume write in to us.
