Life After A Layoff

Layoffs are traumatic experiences. If you have been laid off it is important that you collect yourself together, direct all energies towards a new plan to see what you can do next. There is no point thinking about some that has happened rather focus on things that need to be done.

Layoffs are traumatic experiences and especially so, if you love the job. But if pink-slipped, it’s not the time to sulk and give up, rather battle it out with what needs to be done.

Layoffs are highly demoralizing, but if handled badly, they can be worse. What matters is not what happens to you but whether you’re able to get over it. Here’s how to approach the situation:

The 3Cs of bouncing back:

  1. Connect: A layoff is traumatic, so it’s vital to get in touch with your inner feelings to reconcile. This is an essential perspective to re-enter the workplace. As you move forward, connecting with hiring authorities should be your top priority and getting interview calls, your aim. Prepare well and know your work history well. Talk about your accomplishments showcasing yourself as a clear value addition. Highlight your USPs.
  2. Be clear: There are things that need clarification for the re-employment process and a layoff gives you time to examine your career history and career goals. Ask yourself, “do my values align with the career?” If not, career satisfaction will always elude you. You’re happy only when your values gel with the company’s culture. Evaluate your skills and interests to explore possibilities. Go through your educational qualifications to figure out if you have to brush up a skill or acquire some new ones.
